My father worked in aerospace on the Hill and left desk models and program material. How do I tell a real presentation model from a hobby kit?
Contractor desk models were made to be given rather than built, so they are usually solid cast resin, mahogany, or machined metal, heavy for their size, on a turned pedestal with an engraved plate naming the program or the recipient. A hobby kit is light injection-molded plastic with visible seams and glue lines, and its decals sit on the surface. Do not repaint a chipped model or reglue a broken pylon, because collectors of program history want the original finish and the plate intact.
