How do you authenticate designer furniture?

Should we sell before or after listing the house?
Before staging decisions get made, ideally. Realtors sometimes stage with the very pieces that should be sold properly. Have us through first and you will know what deserves a real price.
Do you come out for single pieces?
For the right piece, yes. A documented designer set or significant lighting justifies the drive alone, and we bundle smaller calls into our desert trips.
The sofa is original but faded. Should we reupholster before selling?
No. Original upholstery, even sun faded and worn thin at the arms, is part of what a collector is buying, and new fabric erases the evidence that the piece is what it claims to be. Reupholstering also means stripping the frame, and the maker’s tags are usually stapled to that frame. Leave it as it is and let the wear tell the truth.
There are paper labels stuck under our patio chairs and a tag under the sofa. Should I clean those off?
Leave every one of them. The dry air out here is the reason paper labels survived under desert furniture when they rotted off the same pieces everywhere else, and a label under a seat is often the difference between a good guess and a documented attribution. Do not hose the patio set down, do not peel back a curling label to read it, and do not repaint a powder coated frame. Look under the arm caps and along the underside of the frame before anyone starts cleaning anything.
The dry heat opened cracks in the walnut credenza and lifted a little veneer. Is it still worth anything?
Usually yes. Shrinkage lines and small lifted veneer are what desert houses do to case pieces, and a correct piece by a real maker with honest desert wear prices better than the same piece badly repaired. Do not clamp and glue it yourself, do not fill the cracks with wax sticks, and do not flood the whole case with oil to even out the color, because a recent oiling is obvious and it complicates a proper restoration later. Show it as it stands and let the offer account for the condition.
