Sell to Us · Vintage Denim

Sell vintage Levi’s to people who know what they’re holding.

Old Levi’s are one of the most misunderstood things in any California closet. To most buyers, a worn denim jacket is a worn denim jacket. To collectors, in the United States and especially in Japan, the right jacket is a five-figure piece. We recently paid $12,000, on the spot, for a 1940s Levi’s Type 1. The seller was a former dealer who knew exactly what he had, and he chose to sell it to us.

We buy vintage Levi’s and other denim across Southern California: jackets, jeans, shirts, and advertising. If your family kept old workwear from a ranch, a garage, a tour of service, or simply a long life well-lived, it is worth one phone call before it goes anywhere else.

What the details are worth

Type 1, 2 & 3 jackets

Pleated fronts, single or double pockets, buckle-backs. The earlier, the better.

Big E 501s

Capital-E red tabs (pre-1971), redline selvedge, hidden rivets, leather patches.

Buckle-back jeans

Cinch-backs from the 1920s-40s, even heavily worn or repaired.

Lee & Wrangler

101-J and Storm Rider jackets, house-marked sanforized denim, Blue Bell era Wrangler.

Denim ephemera

Levi’s store displays, advertising, flags, banners, and salesman samples.

Condition matters less than you think

Repairs, fading, paint, even missing buttons, real wear is part of what collectors pay for, and some of the most valuable denim we see looks like it should have been thrown away twice. Do not wash it, do not repair it, do not cut anything off. Put it in a bag exactly as it is and call us. We serve all of Southern California from our Laguna Hills warehouse, and for exceptional pieces we will drive any distance the same week. As one seller, Joe, put it in his Google review: “Had a bunch of old Carhartt workwear and Levi’s jeans I was going to give away or donate. These guys filled my pockets with fresh greenbacks. Thanks for the love gentlemen!”

How to Tell if Your Levi's Are Vintage. Check the Made in USA Tag

Read the transcript

Hi guys, Sam from California Vintage Buyers here, and today we're going to talk a little bit about Levi's. Very simple information. How do you know if your Levi's are vintage or not? Well, they made them in the USA up till about 2003. So one tell to look for, if they're USA or not, would be, see on the tag right there, Made in USA, right above the waist size. That's what you want to look for. That's there from the 90s and 80s. Now, sometimes you're going to find a pair that looks like that. You can't read anything, but just by looking at that paper patch, you can tell them puppies are not from Costco in 2016. Those are pretty old, you know what I'm saying? And then you have stuff like this, where it looks like it might be vintage, but it doesn't say Made in USA. That's because it's not. It's made in Guatemala. You can tell right there. Why do I point all this out? Well, because there's a slight value variation in USA denim versus non-USA denim. We still buy it all, but I just want to give a little bit of a tutorial of the first place to look to know if your pants are made in USA. If they're USA Levi's, it would be this back tag. After that, inside here, left pocket, you'll find another tag in there for the 90s ones. Look in there as well if this patch is missing out here. So, that's it. USA Levi's.

Common questions

How can I tell if my Levi’s are old?

Quick checks: a capital E on the red tab (pre-1971), a single pocket on a jacket (Type 1, pre-1953), a cinch buckle on the back, selvedge lines inside the leg seam, or a leather patch. Any one of these is reason to call us before doing anything else with it.

Why are old Levi’s worth so much?

Scarcity and demand. Pre-war and WWII-era denim survives in tiny quantities, and collectors worldwide, Japan especially, compete for the best examples. The right jacket or pair of 501s is a serious asset, not old clothing. If you think you are holding one, text photos of the red tab and the patch to (949) 449-1255 and we will tell you the same day.

Should I sell on eBay instead?

You can, but grading vintage denim accurately is hard, mistakes are expensive in both directions, and high-value listings attract fraud. We make a documented cash offer in person, you decide on the spot, and there are no fees, returns, or chargebacks.

One call. We’ll take itfrom there.
