Sam walks four pairs from different eras through the checks that separate collectible Levi's from donation-bin Levi's: the block-letter 501XX patch of the 1990s to 2000s, the month and year code on the care tag, Made in USA, the red 501 tab of the 1980s, redline selvedge before about 1983, and the capital E tab that marks pre-1971 pairs. Filmed for anyone clearing a barn, a ranch or a relative's closet.

What Are Redline Levi's? Selvedge Denim Explained on Real 70s and 80s 501s
Sam explains what redline Levi's are: selvedge denim, the finished edge inside the cuff with a red thread that fades to nothing on worn pairs, shown on 1980s 501s and deadstock 1970s 505s. Levi's made 501s this way until about 1983 to 1984, and redline pairs are worth more than what followed.

The fastest check: Levi's were made in the USA until about 2003, so look for Made in USA on the back tag above the waist size, and on 90s pairs the extra tag inside the left pocket. A worn paper patch you cannot read is its own sign of age.
