How do I tell whether grandpa’s western shirt was rodeo wear or screen wardrobe?
Check inside the collar band and the waistband. Screen wardrobe usually carries a costume house label with a stamped or inked name and a number, sometimes a production title, while rodeo and store bought western wear carries only the maker’s label. Do not dry clean it, do not cut out the tags, and do not iron a fragile one flat. The tags are the provenance, and once they are gone the shirt is just a shirt.
Nobody in the family wrote anything down about the movie ranch years. Is the material still worth showing?
Yes. A production still with your relative in the frame is its own documentation, and so are the envelopes, negative sleeves, and dated call sheets sitting in the same box. Do not sort the snapshots from the stills or discard the ordinary looking ones, and do not write names across the fronts in pen. Bring the box intact and let it be read in order.
