Dating and Valuing Vintage Filson
Filson is one of the few American brands where the label alone can move a garment from a few hundred dollars to considerably more. The sequence of labels is well documented, and you can place most pieces within a couple of decades in about a minute.
C.C. Filson started outfitting prospectors in Seattle in 1897, for the Klondike rush, and the company has been making more or less the same clothing for more or less the same reasons ever since. The Mackinaw Cruiser, the wool coat with the map pocket across the back, was patented on March 3, 1914, and named for the timber cruisers who walked the forests estimating what the standing timber was worth. Both facts matter when you are trying to date a coat, because Filson changed its labels far more often than it changed its patterns.

Dating it by the label
This is the part worth learning, because it is quick and it is reliable. Filson labels run in a recognisable sequence.
- Address labels, the ones that print a Seattle street address on the tag: 1910s to 1930s. These are the earliest you are realistically going to find in a closet.
- FIL-CLO labels, the abbreviated brand mark: 1930s to 1940s.
- Union Made diamond labels: later than both of the above.
That sequence will not give you a year, and anyone who tells you a label alone gives you a year is overselling it. What it does give you is a decade or two, which is usually the difference between the everyday range and the premium one.
The USFS mark
Filson made garments marked for the United States Forest Service, and those markings carry a premium over the same garment unmarked. If you find a stamp or a label referencing the Forest Service, photograph it clearly and do not attempt to clean it off. It is one of the few marks where the ink itself is part of the value.
What condition actually does here
Wool and tin cloth both age in ways collectors accept. Fading, oil staining on tin cloth, and softening on wool are all normal and are not deductions in the way a first-time seller expects. Moth damage is the exception and it is the one thing worth checking honestly before you get your hopes up: hold the garment to the light and look through the shoulders and the underarms. Holes there change the number materially, and no amount of good labelling compensates for them.
