Because both happen in front of you. The scale sits on your table, the day’s gold price is on a screen you can read, and the percentage we pay is stated before anything is weighed. One thing to watch anywhere you sell: some buyers quote per pennyweight instead of per gram because the bigger unit makes the number sound larger. We quote in grams.
My husband’s gold watch stopped running. Is it worth anything?
Very possibly, and possibly a lot more than its gold. A gold-cased watch has value as metal and as a watch, and for many brands the watch is the bigger number even when it is not running. Do not have it polished or repaired first; let us read the case and reference as it sits.
