What Is a Fur Coat Really Worth? An Honest Guide

Almost nobody buys the fur coat they are trying to value. They inherit it, usually with a decades-old insurance appraisal folded into the memory of what it cost, and the gap between that number and today’s market is the widest we handle in any category. This guide gives you the honest picture first: the real auction results for ordinary mink, the specific things that raise a coat above them, the plain answer to whether selling fur is even legal in California, and what to do with a coat that turns out to have no market at all. Two kinds of value, and only one is a selling price

The appraisal stapled inside the garment bag stated replacement cost: what a new equivalent would have cost at retail, for insurance purposes. That was never a resale price, and treating it as one is the single most common mistake in this category. Resale is set by what buyers pay today, and fur resale has softened for decades. The two numbers still have separate jobs. If you need a value for insurance or probate, you need a licensed appraiser and should pay for one. If you want to know what the coat would actually sell for, a paid appraisal rarely helps; a dealer who buys furs can read it free from photos, and the honest resale answer is usually far below the document in the bag.

What ordinary mink actually brings

The auction record is the kindest way to show this, because it is nobody’s opinion. The results below are realized prices from houses that publish them; the UK results are stated in pounds exactly as the houses sold them, because converting them would only add false precision. Read the mink rows first. They are the market for the coat most families are holding.

Sit with the top rows a moment. A full-length ranch mink, the coat that cost months of salary in 1975, hammered at 150 GBP in 2025. The other labels worth reading

Open the coat and read the lining at the back of the neck. Other labels that make a buyer look twice: Revillon, Maximilian, and the fur salons of the great department stores, Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue among them. We will be straight about the limit of this: a label is a reason to look, not a promised price. We have not found a published, verifiable auction result for a Blackglama coat, so we treat the name as a signal to examine the coat carefully rather than as a number, and you should be suspicious of anyone who quotes you a Blackglama price off a chart.

Condition is where the value actually lives or dies

Every figure in this guide assumes a coat in good condition, and fur fails in a way most textiles do not: the hide itself dries out. A coat that spent its summers in cold storage stays supple for decades; one that spent twenty years in an attic or garage is often past saving no matter what the label says, because heat is what kills fur. The tells are checkable at home. Shedding that starts at the cuffs and hem is the hide letting go of the hair. Fold a section of the skin side gently near a seam: sound leather flexes quietly and springs back, while a dried hide crackles like paper and shows pale split lines. A dried, brittle, shedding coat is unsellable at any label, and no cleaning, conditioning cream, or reglazing brings it back; those treatments make a dry fur worse and rarely return what they cost. Do nothing to the coat, keep any cold storage tags exactly where they are stitched, and let someone read it as it sits.

Is it even legal to sell a fur coat in California?

Yes, for used fur, and this deserves a precise answer because getting it wrong in either direction misleads people. California Fish and Game Code section 2023, added by AB 44 and operative January 1, 2023, made it unlawful to sell, offer for sale, trade, or manufacture a fur product in the state. That ban covers new fur products. The same section exempts, by name, a used fur product, which the statute defines as fur in any form that has been worn or used by an ultimate consumer, meaning a person who bought it for their own use rather than for resale. So a family selling a grandmother’s mink, and a buyer like us reselling it, are both dealing in a used fur product and sit inside the exemption. In plain language: it remains legal in California to own, inherit, wear, buy, sell, and donate fur that a consumer has already worn or used. That is general information, not legal advice.

• The law’s word is used, not vintage. A never-worn coat with its store tags still attached is a gray area the exemption may not cover, so ask before assuming anything about one.
• Shearling, sheepskin and goatskin with the hair on, hair-on cowhide, and deerskin are excluded from the law’s definition of a fur product entirely, so a shearling coat is not in question.
• California was the first state to ban new fur sales, which is why so much confusion surrounds the used-fur answer. The confusion is understandable; the exemption is in the statute’s own text.

The coats with no market left

Some furs have simply outlived their market: dried hides, heavy wear, small dated pieces in furs nobody collects.
