Punk flyers survived by accident: stapled, pocketed, shoved in drawers, and the accidents are now archives, with the South Bay’s early scene among the most collected. The same logic holds for jazz programs and surf snapshots: ephemera, by definition, was not supposed to last, so what lasted matters. Hermosa’s drawers hold all three histories, and we read them before the remodel empties them blind.

The flyers in the drawer are creased and full of staple holes. Should I flatten or trim them?
No. Do not trim the edges, do not press them under weight, do not remove the staples, and never laminate one. Staple holes, folds, and the pocket wear are the proof that the flyer was actually stapled to a pole and carried home, and collectors read that as authenticity rather than damage. A trimmed or repaired flyer is worth less than the same flyer left rough. Slide them flat into a plain paper folder and leave them alone.
How do I tell an original jazz or surf photograph from a later reprint?
Turn it over first. Original period prints often carry a photographer’s or studio stamp, a wire service caption glued to the back, or a processing date printed in the border. The paper itself helps too: older fiber based prints feel stiffer and heavier than modern glossy resin coated paper, and they usually have a slight warmth rather than a bright white. Do not write on the back, do not use tape, and do not put them in a self-adhesive album, which is where a lot of good prints have been ruined.
