Dad’s watch is engraved on the back with his years at Scripps. Does the engraving hurt what it is worth?
Usually not. A presentation engraving on the caseback dates the watch and ties it to a named person, which reads as provenance rather than damage. What does hurt is having it taken off: polishing a case to erase an engraving rounds the lugs and thins the case, and that is both visible and permanent. Leave it exactly as it is, and bring the box, papers, spare links, or original strap if any of them survived in the drawer.
A steamer trunk came out from the East and has sat in the garage since. Is it worth anything with all those old stickers on it?
The stickers are often the most valuable thing about it. Shipping line and hotel labels, a stenciled name, or an old address card in the lid turn a common trunk into a documented one. Check the lock and corner hardware for a maker’s stamp, and look inside the lid for a paper label beneath the lining. Do not peel the labels, tear out the paper interior, or sand and stain the outside, which is the usual way a good trunk becomes a plain box.
