Is anything left from the Muscle Beach years actually collectible?
Photographs are the main survivor, and the ones that matter are real photo snapshots and postcards rather than later reprints; a real photo shows a silver sheen when tilted to the light and has a printed stamp box on the back. Programs, tickets, souvenir pennants, and gym material from that era are collected too. Do not write on the backs in ink, do not laminate anything, and do not glue prints into an album, which is how most of this material gets ruined.
There is an old wooden paddleboard in the garage rafters. What should we check before doing anything with it?
Look for a small screw in vent plug, usually near the deck or the tail, which tells you the board is hollow and built over an internal frame, and look in the same area for a shaper’s stamp or a hand written name. Do not sand it, do not revarnish it, and do not fill the dings, because the original finish and the repairs a rider made himself are a large part of what a collector is buying. Keep the vent plug open in storage, since a sealed hollow board that heats up in a closed garage can split along its seams. Photograph the tail, the deck and any markings before it gets moved.
Everything in the apartment has hung in place since the sixties. Is the paper taped to the backs of the frames worth keeping?
Very much so. Fifty year tenancies are the reason gallery labels, framer’s stickers and sometimes the original receipt are still on the backing board here, and that paperwork is often the fastest way to establish who made a print and when it was sold. Do not strip the backing off to look at a signature, and do not pull a print out of an old frame before the visit, because brittle tape and old hinge mounts are where the damage happens. If a piece is signed in pencil in the margin rather than printed inside the image, mention that when you call.
