Common questions
How often are you actually in Ventura County?
At least monthly, more when calls cluster. Oxnard, Camarillo, and Ojai ride along on the same runs, so neighbors can share a visit window.
What should I photograph before calling?
Tags, labels, and overall shots. For denim, the back of the jacket or jeans and any inside tags. For boards, the full deck and any logos. Five photos usually tell us whether the drive is on.
Do you handle full estates this far north?
Yes. The one-visit, one-offer process travels with us, and for larger Ventura households we simply schedule the removal logistics across a day or two.
How can I tell whether an old field or oil-patch work jacket is actually old before I donate it?
Turn it inside out first. Older work garments usually show single-needle stitching, a union label sewn into the neck or a pocket bag, and often a cinch strap or buckle at the back waist, and the inside leg seam of early denim shows a tight woven edge with a colored line running through it. Do not wash it, do not have holes patched, and do not cut off a faded label to tidy it up. Laundering and repairs are exactly what pull value out of a work garment, and the Main Street racks are full of pieces donated because they looked too worn to keep.
My father shot photographs at California Street for years and there are boxes of slides and negatives. Does that matter?
Surf photography from the point is real history, and the original film is the valuable part, not the drugstore prints. Keep slides in their sleeves and negatives in their glassine sheets, store them flat and out of the garage heat, and do not tape, trim, or write on them with a ballpoint. If shop tees or contest posters are in the same boxes, leave those unwashed and unfolded and let us see the whole group together.
