San Clemente has been collecting jewelry since Ole Hanson sold the first Spanish-style lots in the 1920s, and its boxes show the town's whole history: deco pieces from the founding families, Mexican silver carried up the coast for a hundred years, turquoise from the era when every beach town had a silversmith, and the surf-generation households that inherited all of it. Families who have held a house here for two or three generations are clearing them now, and those boxes run deep.
We are the team behind Old 44 Vintage in San Juan Capistrano, one town up the coast, and San Clemente is a fifteen minute drive we make constantly. Every piece gets read in front of you: hallmarks, signatures, silver marks including the Mexican eagle stamps most buyers cannot date, and honest condition. Common questions
Is old Mexican silver actually valuable, or just souvenirs?
Both exist, and the marks tell them apart. Taxco silver from the 1930s through 1960s, especially signed by the notable makers, has a real collector market, and the eagle assay stamps date a piece within useful ranges. Tourist pieces are more modest, and we say so. Bring the drawer; we read the marks in front of you.
I have turquoise and Native American pieces mixed in. Do you buy those?
Yes, and we take them seriously. Older turquoise, real stones rather than block, and pieces by known silversmiths carry genuine value, and we price them against that market rather than by silver weight. Our old turquoise guide on this site explains what we look for.
We are clearing my parents' house. Can jewelry and everything else happen in one visit?
